Why Multi-Wall Sheet Works for Instrument Cases
| ![]() | ![]() |
Section before grammage: a 6 mm twin-wall board at 1,600 g/m2 bends less than a 3 mm solid PP board of equal weight, because the two skins sit far from the neutral axis and the flutes work as shear webs. Ask for the profile, not the kilo.
Suspension, not padding: a 4 mm sheet folded into a cradle holds a 2.4 kg instrument 20 mm clear of the case floor, so a corner drop never transfers directly into the housing.
Wipe-down surface: the closed skins tolerate repeated 70% IPA wipe-down without swelling or shedding, which moulded pulp cannot survive.
Quiet chemistry: no plasticiser, no chlorine, no latex, so the board can sit beside a titanium implant tray without leaving a residue on it.
| Medical packaging is approved as a system, not as a board, so the copy on this page is written around the test sequence most distributors quote: ASTM D4169 DC-13 for pallet loads or ISTA 3A for parcel shipments. That means an hour of random vibration at 0.5 g rms, drops on every face and edge, then a compression stack held for 24 hours. A hollow sheet earns its place at the vibration stage, where the flute walls break up high-frequency chatter between instrument and case, but only if the case itself is stiff enough not to rack. Past roughly 500 mm of case length, a 4 mm twin-wall panel needs a diagonal brace or a corner post; below that, flat 6 mm panels normally pass without help. |

| Two details decide whether a case survives a year of field service. The first is the cut edge: a steel rule die leaves open flutes that release shavings into the case and wick cleaning fluid inward, so we weld or tape every perimeter and quote the lip width with the drawing. The second is the dimension you send us. Give the internal envelope that must hold the instrument plus its foam, not the outside size of the old case, and let us add the 20 mm wall allowance. Getting that order right removes most revision rounds. Tooling for a die-cut liner runs about seven working days after drawing approval, and colour, anti-static grade and flame rating are chosen before the die is cut, not after. |
